Facebook is doing everything it can to come up with new sources of revenues.
Now it's turning to its massive base of users with a new product, Promoted Posts, that it's introducing to the United States.
The feature lets you pay to mark a post as "Sponsored" and have it appear prominently in your friends' News Feeds.
Businesses have been able to buy such ads for a while. And ordinary users have always had the option to buy display ads that appear on the right-hand rail of Facebook's website?sometimes using Facebook's targeting to comic effect by targeting coworkers, journalists, or employers. (For a while, "Hire Me" Facebook ads were a thing.)
But ads in the News Feed are generally thought to be the most likely to be noticed, since that's the area of the site where most Facebook users focus their attention.
One thing's for sure: Once Facebook users start noticing these ads, there's almost certainly going to be a ruckus as we sort out the etiquette of advertising aspects of our life to our friends.
Will people start running ads for yard sales on Facebook, as TechCrunch's Josh Constine suggests? (Facebook would like that, since it's eager to see more commerce happening on the site.)

ScienceDaily (Oct. 2, 2012) ? Among patients with either coronary artery disease (CAD) risk factors only, known prior heart attack, or known CAD without heart attack, the use of beta-blockers was not associated with a lower risk of a composite of cardiovascular events that included cardiovascular death, nonfatal heart attack or nonfatal stroke, according to a study in the October 3 issue of JAMA.
"Treatment with beta-blockers remains the standard of care for patients with coronary artery disease, especially when they have had a myocardial infarction [MI; heart attack]. The evidence is derived from relatively old post-MI studies, most of which antedate modern reperfusion or medical therapy, and from heart failure trials, but has been widely extrapolated to patients with CAD and even to patients at high risk for but without established CAD. It is not known if these extrapolations are justified. Moreover, the long-term efficacy of these agents in patients treated with contemporary medical therapies is not known, even in patients with prior MI," according to background information in the article.
Sripal Bangalore, M.D., M.H.A., of the NYU School of Medicine, New York, and colleagues conducted a study to evaluate the association between beta-blocker use and long-term cardiovascular outcomes. The observational study included data from patients in the Reduction of Atherothrombosis for Continued Health (REACH) registry. From this registry, 44,708 patients met the study inclusion criteria of whom 14,043 patients (31 percent) had prior MI, 12,012 patients (27 percent) had documented CAD but without MI, and 18,653 patients (42 percent) had CAD risk factors only. The last follow-up data collection was April 2009. The primary outcome for this study was a composite of cardiovascular death, nonfatal MI, or nonfatal stroke. The secondary outcome was the primary outcome plus hospitalization for atherothrombotic events or a revascularization procedure. The overall median (midpoint) follow-up was 44 months. Among the 44,708 patients in the study, 21,860 were included in the propensity score-matched analysis.
The researchers found that in the prior MI group, the event rates were not significantly different among those with beta-blocker use (489 [16.93 percent]) vs. those without beta-blocker use (532 [18.60 percent]) for the primary outcome, or the secondary outcome (30.96 percent vs. 33.12 percent, respectively). In the CAD without MI cohort, the event rates were not different in those with beta-blocker use (391 [12.94 percent]) vs. those without p-blocker use (405 [13.55 percent]) for the primary outcome, for cardiovascular death, for stroke, and for MI. The event rates were higher in those with beta-blocker use (1,101 [30.59 percent] vs. those without beta-blocker use (1,002 [27.84 percent]) for the secondary outcome and for hospitalization in the propensity score-matched model.
In the risk factors alone group, the event rates were higher in those with beta-blocker use (467 [14.22 percent] vs. those without beta-blocker use (403 [12.11 percent]) for the primary outcome, for the secondary outcome (870 [22.01 percent] vs. 797 [20.17 percent], respectively) but not for MI or stroke. In the propensity score-matched model, there were similar event rates for cardiovascular death and for hospitalization.
The researchers also found that among patients with recent MI (one year or less), beta-blocker use was associated with a lower incidence of the secondary outcome.
"Among patients enrolled in the international REACH registry, beta-blocker use was not associated with a lower event rate of cardiovascular events at 44-month follow-up, even among patients with prior history of MI. Further research is warranted to identify subgroups that benefit from beta-blocker therapy and the optimal duration of beta-blocker therapy," the authors conclude.

Last week I bought one of these by accident. I'd meant to purchase a multi-port USB charger and apparently clicked this instead. At first I was upset, but then I actually used it and realized it's great for travel purposes. You can use any USB charging cable with it, but it comes with a free (and perfectly-sized) Micro USB cable. That's wonderful if you're an Android user or have some other compatible device. Despite being pretty tiny, the charger can actually hold a reasonably long cable. It comes with a fairly thick 70cm (that's about 2.3 feet) cable, and I had no problem wrapping a standard (and thinner) iPod cable around it. While I didn't intend to buy this little guy, it turned out to be a happy accident.

Foreign policy and national security issues have largely taken a backseat to economic concerns in the hard-fought and expensive US Senate race in Massachusetts, and barring a monumental international event, that dynamic is unlikely to change in the final weeks of the campaign.

But with continued instability in the Middle East and other global challenges, the positions of Republican incumbent Scott Brown and Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren may well come into sharper focus. Both will be asked to provide voters with a sense of how ? as a US senator for the next six years ? they would view America's role in the world and vote on key questions from national defense and trade policy.
The candidates' written responses to a series of questions on foreign affairs posed by The Associated Press reveal contrasts both stark and subtle, yet also some striking similarities in approach.
On the threat posed by Iran, both Brown and Warren indicated all options up to and including military action must be considered if diplomacy and sanctions fail to end the regime's pursuit of nuclear capability. Calling Iran the "most serious threat to world peace and stability," Brown criticized Warren's use during the campaign's first televised?debate?of the word "nuanced" to describe the preferred U.S. approach.
"President Obama attempted a more nuanced approach to Iran early in his term, and he quickly discovered it didn't work," Brown said.
Diplomacy and sanctions had merely slowed Iran's nuclear program and bought some time, he added, and the administration now needed to apply "severe pressure" on Iran's government and economy.
Warren said she supported Obama's strategy for preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear power.
"We have the toughest sanctions we have ever had against Iran, and I will work to make them even tougher," she said.
The candidates ended their response on Iran with similar language: Brown said the "US must keep every option on the table;" Warren said she "wouldn't take any options off the table," while also cautioning that "we must not rush to war."
Commenting on another Middle East hotspot, both declared that Syrian President Bashir Assad must go, but they differed on how the US should respond to the government's violent crackdown on dissidents.
"It is appropriate to identify moderate elements within the opposition and provide them with weapons so they can fight back against Assad and the Syrian army," Brown said. The senator made clear he did not, at this time, support sending in US ground troops or imposing a no-fly zone.
"Options such as providing lethal support such as weapons, establishing humanitarian zones, or setting up a no-fly zone must be carefully considered," Warren said. "Because lethal assistance can have complex and unintended consequences, we should not act unless we are confident that we can do more good than harm and that we have a clear plan and achievable goals."
Neither Brown nor Warren offered a specific opinion on Obama's timetable for withdrawing troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014. Brown said he was less concerned about the precise timing as with the need to defeat the enemy and place Afghan forces in position to assume control of the country's security.
Warren said the US should leave Afghanistan as "quickly as possible," while ensuring the safety of troops, so that the $2 billion spent weekly on the war can be used for domestic needs.
The nation's budget woes and the winding down of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are likely to renew pressure on Congress to rein in military spending. Here, both candidates advocated a smart approach to any defense reductions, with Warren opposing "across-the-board" cuts and Brown warning that defense programs should not be trimmed indiscriminately.
The Republican, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said he backed the panel's $634.4 billion defense authorization while also supporting the Pentagon's goal of finding $500 million in savings. Warren did not cite a savings target, but said the ending of the wars could permit downsizing of the US Army. She also called for greater investment in cybersecurity.
