Rabbi Shmuley Boteach: America's $2 Billion a Year to Egypt Hinges on Its Peace With Israel

I am thrilled that Egypt has now held its first free election for president. Let me further say that I disagree completely with those who oppose the Arab Spring and say that better the devil dictator you know then the Islamist radical you don't know. Go tell a father whose son has been brutalized in prison by Mubarak or whose daughter has been killed by Kaddafi that they should hush because it could still get worse.

I have been a passionate and vocal supporter of the Arab Spring and began speaking out against the suppression of all Arab rights years before it happened. I have a friend in Los Angeles, the writer and marketing guru David Suissa, who showed me an idea about 12 years ago called "Free the Four Hundred Million." Its goal was to have the Jewish community emerge as the leading voice against the brutalization of our Arab brothers and sisters under Arab dictatorships. I began writing columns then because of how much this initiative spoke to me and how fully I wanted to participate in having the Jewish community, especially join in the chorus to protect and safeguard Arab life. After all, it is the Hebrew Bible that declares so emphatically, in its very first chapter, that every human being is created equally in the image of G-d. So when the Arab Spring finally arrived, I fought bitterly against those who were more worried about what might emerge through Arab democratization than they were concerned for the suffering of Arab citizens under a whole collection of despots.

Having said all that, the emerging Arab democracies must obviously take responsibility for the people they elect and the consequences of their actions. The people of Gaza tragically elected the terrorists of Hamas to represent them and are suffering immeasurably under its tyrannical rule.

The same must now apply to Egypt. I extend to the new President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood every good wish in presiding over his people as a just and righteous head of state. I hope that he will back away from extremist rhetoric and deeds of some of his Muslim Brotherhood colleagues. I believe that he should be given the opportunity to demonstrate that he is a moderate, dedicated to the rule of law, leading Egypt toward the community of free and civilized governments. I believe he should also be afforded the opportunity to demonstrate his commitment to Egypt's peace treaty with Israel.

But should the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt continue, as has already begun, to call for a closer bond with America's arch-enemy Iran, and a "rethinking" of the peace treaty with Israel and the Camp David accords, then I believe the United States must cease to fund the $2 billion a year military aid commitment to Egypt. I join Congressmen Allen West and Joe Walsh in rightly pointing out that this huge sum, paid annually since the presidency of Jimmy Carter, was designed to support and sustain Egypt's peace treaty with Israel. Any Egyptian retreat from that commitment must be met with an immediate American cessation of military aid to Egypt. We are not here to fund the Muslim Brotherhood. We are here to assist nations that are committed to peaceful coexistence and democracy.

Let me clarify something about the Arab's democractic elections. As I said, I support them fully and oppose all those who would prefer Kissingerian realpolitik in which the United States is prepared to prop up dictators in order to maintain order and regimes that are (somewhat) friendly to the United States. This nation either believes in democracy or it does not. We cannot betray our values. America must serve as the world's foremost voice supporting the Arab Spring and a commitment to the protection of Arab rights and life.

But neither can we forget that even Hitler was elected democratically. Democracy without a legitimate constitution and a Bill of Rights, especially protecting the rights of minorities, can become a very scary thing. What you get is a tyranny of the majority. So the United States, as the world's foremost democracy and sole superpower, must insist that elected regimes be restrained by a constitution that safeguards against a gravitation toward tyranny.

I was always of the opinion that the United States should have insisted that Iraq sign a peace treaty with Israel before we withdrew. We had every right to do so. It was our blood and treasure that created Iraq's democracy and the last thing the Middle East needs is another Arab country that scapegoats Israel for its woes.

This is bad not only for Middle East peace but especially for the Arabs. How does any Arab citizen who has no job, cannot read the truth in a newspaper, and is oppressed by his government benefit from hearing that all his problems are caused by the Jews?

In my district where I am running for Congress we have one of the largest Arab-American populations in the country. They see my opponent Bill Pascrell as their champion and came out in huge number to help him defeat his Democractic challenger, Congressman Steve Rothman.

But why is Pascrell their champion? I can, as yet, find no record of meaningful support of the Arab Spring, no condemnations of Arab dictators who slaughter their people. I know of no denunciations from Pascrell against honor killings of young Arab women or Pascrell standing up for the rights of gay people in Arab lands.

No, it appears that what makes Pascrell an Arab champion arguably lies in his signing of a notorious letter that condemned Israel for its blockade of Gaza and Hamas, and his support for Imam Muhammad Katanani of Paterson whom the INS has been trying to deport after lying on a visa application about being arrested by Israel for being a member of, and recruiting for, Hamas. (For the record I have said that if Katanani publicly condemns Hamas for their terrorism and sworn determination to eradicate Israel I would join Congressman Pascrell in fighting for Katanani to remain in the U.S. We have also called Imam Katanani several times to meet with him and visit his mosque but have not heard back).

But surely it would help Arabs more to have a political representative be one of the foremost supporters of the Arab Spring rather than finding fault with Israel for implementing a necessary blockade.

It is my belief that voters will look past the simple expectations in this race. I am the candidate of Arab freedom and aspiration.

TUV Rheinland Supports Rising Bluetooth 4.0 Application | Biz Daily ...

?

HONG KONG, June 29, 2012 /PRNewswire-Asia/ ? Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) adopted the latest 4.0 Core version in July, 2010. Along with 4.0 Low Energy (LE) Technology was developed, there is a growth in 4.0 (LE) end product coming out of the market also. TUV Rheinland Hong Kong Bluetooth testing laboratory as the first and the only qualified Bluetooth Qualification Test Facility (BQTF) in Hong Kong, which can handle RF conformance testing, Bluetooth protocol and application profile testing for all Bluetooth specification (BR / EDR, to the latest? 4.0 version). We had assisted a number of chip or module manufactures to obtain the Bluetooth certification for their Bluetooth chip and module under 4.0 core version.

Over the years, TUV Rheinland was devoted in developing the Bluetooth test capability in Greater China region. Following the foot step of TUV Rheinland Taiwan, TUV Rheinland Hong Kong became the second BQTF in Greater China region that can offer testing for all Bluetooth specification (BR / EDR, to the latest 4.0 version) for Bluetooth RF conformance testing and application profile testing in July 2012. In additional, TUV Rheinland Hong Kong is also one of the local certification body (LCB) authorized by Hong Kong Communications Authority who can conduct testing and certification service according to HKCA standard for Telecommunications and ISM product.

With the well-equipped testing capability of TUV Rheinland, ASUSTek Computer Inc, completed the first 4.0 core Bluetooth qualification for their own brand product Padfone?. Vencer Co., Ltd, has also designed a low power Bluetooth Anti-theft key chain (Bluetooth V4.0 Proximity Tag) which based on the Bluetooth low energy technology and was already been certified.? The advantage of Vencer 4.0 Proximity Tag is low energy consumption, small and portable which make it easy to carry and can be connected with iPhone 4S via PXP (Proximity Profile) and FMP (Find Me Profile), in order to detect the distance between two devices. Hence, once the distance between the tag and the mobile phone was beyond the certain range, an alarm signal will be issued, in order to prevent the mobile phone being stolen or lost. With the release of these two Bluetooth Specifications (PXP FMP), more diversely in security monitoring and remote control calling devices can be ??in the near future.

With the development of wireless technology, nowadays, beside Bluetooth which was commonly found in mobile phone and computer device, wireless charging technology (Qi) was also become more and more popular in some low power device (e.g. mobile phone). For example, simply placing iPhone 4S with wireless charging receiver backcase on the wireless charging pad, you can charge iPhone 4S without any connection of the adapter or wiring, which fulfills the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) Qi standard requirement and because there is no limitation of the connection interface, Theoretically, it can be used on every devices which support Qi technology.

TUV Rheinland is not only a SIG appointed BQTF, but also recognized by Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) as a third party Qi Compliance testing laboratory. TUV Rheinland participated in the development of the wireless charging specification and execution of certification service. With our professionalism we support our clients to develop wireless technology and provide a wide range of testing and certification services.

Can We Trust Egypt's New President, Mohammed Morsi?

Morsi.jpg

Throughout America's history, there have been people who denied threats from our enemies. During the Revolutionary War, significant numbers sided with the British monarchy. Enablers in politics, the media and even religion helped communism remain in power for seven decades in the Soviet Union. German Nazis had their U.S. apologists.

The presidential election in Egypt, won by the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohammed Morsi in a race where three-quarters of Egyptians voted for someone else, challenges contemporary deniers and enablers who refuse to acknowledge the threat advancing Islamism poses to Israel and the West. Enough Egyptians voted for Morsi to allow Islamists to achieve greater political power than at any time since the Brotherhood's 1928 founding.

Morsi mouths the words the West wants to hear (he was educated in America). He speaks of being president of "all Egyptians," promising to honor all international agreements made by the Hosni Mubarek regime.

A cleric, Safwat Higazi, introduced Morsi at a May 1 campaign rally and stated the Brotherhood's objective: "Our capital shall be Jerusalem, Allah willing." That seems to signal the real direction in which Morsi could take his country. It is certainly in line with Muslim Brotherhood thinking.

After more than three years of pandering and apologizing to the Islamic world, the Obama administration has produced a tree bearing rotten fruit. The White House congratulated Morsi on his victory. What else could it do? It won't admit error or acknowledge that the "Arab Spring" is starting to resemble a Siberian winter.

Iran continues its nuclear weapons program and threatens to wipe the "Zionist entity" off the map. Russian President Vladimir Putin visits Israel and urges Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to attack Iran, to which Russia has been providing nuclear technology. Should Egypt again become hostile to the Jewish state (the recent terror attacks from the Sinai border area are a sign that 32 years of stability along the Egyptian-Israeli border could unravel), Israel may be in greater peril than at any time in its modern history.

Sixteen months ago, the Brotherhood declared disinterest in the Egyptian presidency, vowing not to run a candidate. Add that to the long list of lies and empty promises that numerous Arab and Islamic leaders have peddled to the West.

Columnist Max Boot seemingly buys into the fantasies of the apologists, enablers, and deniers. In a Commentary magazine article titled "Let the Brotherhood Rule in Egypt," Boot writes, "As long as a Brotherhood government must face voters in the future, popular sentiment will act as a check on its illiberal tendencies."

Many dictators have been elected once.

TRMM Satellite measures Debby's drenching Florida rains

Debby's highest rainfall totals from June 20-27 are in excess of 380 mm (~15 inches, shown in purple). The heaviest rains cover a wide patch of central Florida from around Titusville on the east coast to around Homosassa Springs on the west coast within which amounts exceed 260 mm (~10 inches, shown in orange) to over 380 mm in the center. Another band of heavy rain runs east-west across no.Florida from Jacksonville to near Tallahassee. The highest totals are around Lake City and exceed 380 mm. Credit: Credit: NASA/SSAI, Hal Pierce

NASA's TRMM satellite provided data that allowed scientists to calculate Tropical Storm Debby's rainfall totals across Florida. The highest rainfall totals from June 20-27 topped 380 mm (~15 inches) in a wide patch of central Florida from around Titusville on the east coast.

Even though it never became more than a tropical storm, the residents of northern and central Florida will remember Debby. Debby, which formed as a tropical storm on the 23rd of June 2012 in the central Gulf of Mexico, took three full days to reach the Big Bend of Florida just 350 miles away. Although the center didn't make landfall until around 5 p.m. EDT on the afternoon of June 26 when it crossed the coast near Steinhatchee, Florida, Debby's effects were felt well away from the center.

Most of the rain and weather associated with Debby were well to the north and east of the center over Florida, which was effectively inundated with rain squalls originating over the Gulf and wrapping around the eastern side of the storm for 3 days. The result was copious amounts of rain over the central and northern parts of the state in addition to an outbreak of tornadoes over central and southern Florida on June 24.

In addition to capturing detailed images of tropical storms, TRMM is ideally suited to measure rainfall from space. TRMM is a joint mission between NASA and the Japanese space agency JAXA.

NASA's TRMM satellite captured rainfall rates within Tropical Depression Debby on June 27. The yellow, green and blue areas indicate light-to-moderate rainfall between 20 and 40 millimeters (.78 to 1.57 inches) per hour. The red area is considered heavy rainfall at 2 inches/50 mm per hour. Credit: Credit: NASA/SSAI, Hal Pierce

For increased coverage, TRMM is used to calibrate rainfall estimates from other additional satellites. The TRMM-based, near-real time Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. is used to estimate rainfall over a wide portion of the globe. TMPA rainfall totals are shown here for the 7-day period June 20 to 27, 2012 over and around Florida.

TRMM data showed that the highest rainfall totals for the period are in excess of 380 mm (~15 inches). The heaviest rains cover a wide patch of central Florida from around Titusville on the east coast to around Homosassa Springs on the west coast within which amounts exceed 260 mm (~10 inches) to over 380 mm (~15 inches) in the center. Another band of heavy rain is oriented east-west across northern Florida from Jacksonville to near Tallahassee with similar amounts or rain. The highest totals in the band occur around Lake City and exceed 380 mm (~15 inches). This east-west band can be attributed to the interaction of Debby's counterclockwise circulation with the coast and a frontal boundary draped across southern Georgia in an east-west orientation.

After coming ashore, Debby was downgraded to a tropical depression as it crossed northern Florida.

At 5 p.m. EDT on June 27, Debby lost tropical characteristics and became a post-tropical cyclone over the Atlantic Ocean. At that time Debby had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 kmh) and it was located about180 miles (295 km) east of St. Augustine, Fla., near 29.5 North and 78.3 West.

On Thursday, June 28, 2012 at 8 a.m. EDT, the National Hurricane Center noted that showers and thunderstorms associated with post-tropical storm Debby were about 175 miles west-northwest of Bermuda. The shower and thunderstorm activity increased today and the winds are between 15 and 20 mph.Post-tropical Storm Debby continues to move to the northeast and the National Hurricane Center noted that it has a 10 percent chance of re-generating.

Friends reel from shooting of teen lesbian couple

Rainbow ribbons, messages, flowers and cut-out hearts were left near the site in Portland, Tex., where a couple found Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, and Mary Kristene Chapa, 18, after they were shot.

By Miranda Leitsinger, msnbc.com

Friends and family of two teenage girls in a same-sex relationship who were shot in the head in a South Texas park expressed shock and grief Tuesday over the incident in which one of the young women was killed and the other severely injured.

Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, and Mary Kristene Chapa, 18, were found in knee-deep grass in a nature area in Portland by a couple Saturday morning, said Portland Police Chief Randy Wright, who confirmed to msnbc.com details first reported by the Corpus Christi Caller Times.

Rainbow ribbons, goodbye messages, flowers and cut-out hearts were posted around the site where they were found. On Friday, a candlelight vigil and walk will be held for Chapa and Olgin.

?It?s something that I think all of us are going to carry with us for a while,? Frank Reyna, a friend of both girls, told msnbc.com. ?It?s going to take a while to get past this, the idea that there is somebody still out there that did this to these two amazing, beautiful people, and that they?re walking free right now.?

Olgin, originally from Ingleside but recently living in Corpus Christi, died; Chapa, of Sinton, was rushed to an area hospital where she was in stable condition, Wright said Tuesday in a statement.

Police are investigating the shooting of two teenage girls in a same-sex relationship in a small Texas community along the Gulf of Mexico. KRIS reporter Lindsay Curtis has the story.

Wright said police had recovered a bullet casing from a large-caliber gun at the scene -- leading investigators to believe the shootings occurred where the pair was found -- but they haven?t found the weapon. Two witnesses said they heard what could have been gunshots or firecrackers just before midnight last Friday but did not report it, he said.

?If we had a name, you know, we?d be having a different conversation right now. But we have not been able to gather enough information to identify a suspect yet,? Wright told msnbc.com on Monday. ?It appears as if ? this was not just a random attack but that?s something that we really have to develop over time.?

Courtesy of Jillian Manuel

A makeshift memorial was set up near the site in Portland, Tex., where a couple found Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, and Mary Kristene Chapa, 18, after they were shot last week.

A motive had not been established, he said in the statement.

"Information from family and friends indicates that Mollie and Mary were engaged in a same-sex relationship. However, there is no current evidence to indicate the attacks were motivated by that relationship," he said.

Teen lesbian couple found shot in Texas park

Chandler Nunez, who noted that Olgin was one of her best friends in high school, said she was in shock.

? ? I cannot imagine anyone who would want to hurt such a loving and caring person,? she wrote to msnbc.com. ?This was incredibly unexpected and the lack of answers makes this tragedy all the more frustrating.?

Friends said the pair had been together since mid-February.

Reyna, a 19-year-old university student, said he grew up with Chapa, and met Olgin his sophomore year of high school. He described Chapa as an athlete who played softball, and said Olgin, a student at a nearby university, was focused on academics but also was a big joker. He last saw them together at a local coffee shop in May, which was the first time he saw them out as a couple.

?I?m glad that that was the last time that I saw Mollie in person, that that?s the memory that I can live with for the rest of my life, knowing that I saw her happy,? he said.

The couple?s relationship ?was a readily accepted thing,? he added, and was not what their friends focused on.

?We focused on their personalities and how they got along with everybody else ? their kindheartedness and their ability to just make other people smile and make each other smile,? he said. ?We didn?t care ? what they were, it?s who they were.?

Wright said Monday that all indications were that ?third parties? were involved in the assault. Because of her medical condition, Chapa has not been formally interviewed about what happened, he said.

The park, more of a nature area with some parts overgrown and no lights, was often frequented by visitors during the day, but not at night. It is located along a bluff overlooking a bay, Wright said, with some homes situated nearby.

?We?re not really sure how they got to the point that they were found,? he said. ?It is a scenic overlook with a wooden deck and there is a place at the edge of the deck where you can actually go down a very steep incline into a grassy area that leads down to the shoreline, and that?s where they were found.?

The crime rate is low in Portland, north of Corpus Christi on the Gulf of Mexico, Wright said. The last homicide occurred two years ago.

Charlene Camp, Hilary Avila, Myracle Taylor, Bailey Sanders, Jillian Manuel, Tim Robinson (behind Manuel), Kristen Veit, LuAnn Garza, Valerie Tanon and Franceska Hiracheta were some of the couple's friends and well-wishers who created a memorial at the site around where the young women were found in Portland, Tex., last week after they were shot.

While people in the South Texas community prepare for their memorial service, another candlelight vigil for the pair has been organized by Cleve Jones, a gay civil rights activist who conceived the AIDS Memorial Quilt, for Wednesday evening in San Francisco. On Facebook, people noted they would hold vigils in other cities, too.

"You were taken too soon," Megan Olgin, who identified herself as Olgin?s sister on Facebook, wrote in a post. "I love you and always will. You're my guardian angel. I love you little sister. Forever and always ?"

Editor's note: The Portland Police had initially spelled Chapa's name as Christine, though her friends spelled it Kristene. The police department's latest press release Tuesday evening has changed the spelling to Kristene.

Cyprus bailout may equal half its economy

Cyprus, the fifth euro zone country to seek emergency funding from Europe, may need a bailout of up to 10 billion euros ? over half the size of its economy ? officials said on Tuesday.

The Mediterranean island, with a banking sector heavily exposed to debt-crippled Greece, said on Monday it was formally applying for help from the European Union's rescue funds.

Cyprus is the euro zone's third smallest economy but it joins Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Spain in seeking EU rescue funds to try and stay afloat, and is the latest sign that policymakers have failed to stop the debt crisis spreading.

European leaders will meet at a summit on Thursday and Friday but they are not expected to come up with a lasting solution to the region's problems that have also sent Italy's borrowing costs soaring.

Exact amount undecided
Two euro zone officials said that a package of up to 10 billion euros was being considered for the 17.3 billion euro Cyrpriot economy.

"The exact number has not been decided yet. It was to be 6 billion for the state financing and 2 billion for the banks but that is optimistic ? it is more likely to be seven and three ? up to 10 billion euros in total," one euro zone official said.

A second official confirmed the amount was likely to be up to 10 billion euros, a massive bill for Cyprus.

Designated Greek finance minister resigns

Cyprus needs to plug a 1.8 billion euro regulatory capital shortfall in its second largest lender by June 30. Potential aid could be more comprehensive to cover fiscal requirements, Finance Minister Vassos Shiarly told Reuters.

Cyprus is thought to have applied to the EU for aid after exhausting attempts to secure loans from either China or Russia. Those efforts, however, will be ongoing.

"We will continue efforts to secure a bilateral loan, which can be used accordingly," government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou said.

Out of touch with reality?
Cyprus has been shut out of international capital markets for more than a year, with yields on its 10-year benchmark bond over 16 percent on Tuesday. Sidestepping EU aid earlier, it secured a 2.5 billion euro loan from Russia in late 2011.

Soccer gets political as Greece seeks revenge on paymaster Germany

President Demetris Christofias, whose administration has been slammed by opposition for dragging its feet in both applying to the EU and taking measures earlier to shore up the island's flagging economy, was to brief politicians later on Tuesday.

Christofias has been accused by the opposition of being out of touch with reality and ignoring warning signs that the economy was in trouble, suggestions the government strongly denies.

The bailout request comes as Cyprus prepares to assume the rotating EU presidency on July 1.

"It is a tragic coincidence," Cyprus Parliamentary speaker Yiannakis Omirou told state radio.

UK's MI5 chief warns of possible threats to Olympics

?

By Msnbc.com's F. Brinley Bruton and NBC News' Kier Simmons

LONDON -- Iran may return to a campaign of state-sponsored terrorism, the head of MI5, the U.K.'s internal counter-intelligence and security service, said during a wide-ranging talk in London's financial center late Monday.

NBC News has also learned that the British Security Service, MI5's official name, has?substantially expanded its team dealing with possible terrorism threats from Iran.?

"In parallel with rising concern about Iran?s?nuclear intentions, we have seen in recent months a series of attempted terrorist plots against Israeli interests in India, Azerbaijan and elsewhere," Jonathan Evans, director general of MI5, said at a lecture here at the official residence of the Lord Mayor of London, Mansion House. "The U.S. authorities last year uncovered a plot by the Iran?s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to mount an attack on the Saudi Ambassador in America, and of course the IRGC leads straight back to the Iranian leadership."

Just days after the U.S. says it foiled a shocking plan ?allegedly orchestrated by Iran -- to assassinate a Saudi diplomat at a Washington, D.C., restaurant, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton discusses the "dangerous escalation" in Iran's support for terrorism with TODAY's Savannah Guthrie.

?

Bangkok blasts wound Iranian attacker, 4 others

While Iran insists that its nuclear program is peaceful and not aimed at making weapons as suspected by Western nations, tensions are high in the region.?A recent round of nuclear talks between Iran and world powers in Moscow failed to secure a breakthrough, heightening fears Israel might take unilateral military action to curb Iran's nuclear activities, and thus unleash a violent response from Tehran.?

"So a return to state-sponsored terrorism by Iran or its associates, such as Hezbollah, cannot be ruled out as pressure on the Iranian leadership increases," Evans said during?his first public statement in two years.?

Hezbollah is a Lebanese Shiite militant group.

US officials vow to hold Iran accountable for alleged assassination plot

During the annual defense?and security lecture, titled "The Olympics and Beyond," Evans said preparations for the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympic Games have been thorough. But he said the 2012 Summer Games remain a target and will be the center of the world's attention. ?

"No doubt some terrorist networks have thought about whether they could pull off an attack. But the Games are not an easy target and the fact that we have disrupted multiple terrorist plots here and abroad in recent years demonstrates that the U.K. as a whole is not an easy target for terrorism," he said.?

In February, British police, fire and ambulances tested their ability to manage should terrorists strike the Games. NBC's Duncan Golestani reports.

At London Olympics, dogs have sniffed out a key anti-terror role

The threat level was at "substantial," Evans said, which meant that an attack was a strong possibility.?

Terrorism will outlast the Games, he said, noting that there had not been a successful al-Qaida related strike on the U.K. since the July 7, 2005, subway and bus attacks in London that killed 54, including four bombers, and injured more than 700.

However, there had been a "credible terrorist attack plot about once a year since 9/11 -- and before, since the first al-Qaida inspired plot here took place in 2000 -- a year before 9/11."?

Assistant Commissioner Chris Allison of the UK Metropolitan Police will head up the security effort for the 2012 Olympics in London. He says the games will be the UK's largest peacetime security operation in the nation's history.

Report: Fake bomb exposes London Olympic security

The MI5 chief also warned businesses not to become complacent about malicious activity in cyberspace.

"The extent of what is going on is astonishing -- with industrial-scale processes involving many thousands of people lying behind both state-sponsored cyber espionage and organized cyber crime," he said.

Evans also touched on the Arab Spring, which he said "offers the long term hope of a more pluralistic, democratic and flexible system in the Arab world that will respond to the aspirations of its population." ?

Libyans could be turning against the West, think tank says

The swift and sometimes violent change in the Arab world also presented a problem, however, as parts of the region?become more "permissive" environments for al-Qaida extremists. Said Evans:

"A small number of British would-be jihadis are also making their way to Arab countries to seek training and opportunities for militant activity, as they do in Somalia and Yemen. Some will return to the U.K. and pose a threat here. This is a new and worrying development and could get worse as events unfold. So we will have to manage the short term risks if there is to be a longer-term reward from the Arab Spring."

Plane Flying Swastika Soars Over Jersey Shore

(Monday, June 25th, 2012)

New Jersey beachgoers were startled over the weekend to see a small plane flying overhead pulling a swastika banner.

Twitter was abuzz with tweets from people who saw the plane fly over Long Beach Island on Saturday afternoon.

The group behind the flight says it wasn?t meant as a representation of hate. The International Raelian?Movement says the swastika is actually a symbol of peace and beauty that was corrupted by Nazis in 20th century Germany.

On its website, the group writes that the flight was part of its third swastika rehabilitation day.

This roleplay sounds incredibly interesting, but I make a rule not to join roleplays that reserve characters in pairings when the roleplay's plot is not central to those pairings. I apologize for not being able to join in on this, but with your inability to offer less conventional pairings (transgenders or homosexual pairings) and your reserves in pairs, I will have to abstain. Thank you for the ideas from this wonderful roleplay, though.

Ottawa is right to curb Canadians' taste for debt ??

?????Saturday 23rd June, 2012??Source: General Sources ??
Canadians' personal debt load has risen to dizzying levels. For every dollar we earn, we owe a record $1.52. That includes credit card balances, auto loans and leases, lines of credit and - most notably - the mortgages on our homes.
With a recession just behind us and darkening economic clouds in Europe, it is wise for Ottawa to try and tame the debt monster by toughening regulations on new mortgages.

Team Canada looks to young players to carry torch

For longtime fans of the Canadian Open ? and its predecessor, the Canada Cup ? the names of national players blasted over the Softball City P.A. system were familiar ones.

In left-field and batting leadoff for Team Canada, Melanie Matthews; at second base, Kristy Odamura; at catcher, Erin Cumpstone; playing first base, Sheena Lawrick?

All were longtime fixtures in the Canadian lineup ? and some still are.

But now, a new wave of young stars is set to take centre stage when the team hits the field this weekend in South Surrey. And helping lead the youth movement are former White Rock Renegades pitchers Jocelyn Cater and Marina Demore.

Demore, who just completed her junior season at Oregon State University, and Cater, who doesn't even turn 18 until later this summer, will both be in the lineup after making the cut at a tryout camp in Oklahoma City earlier this week; the camp was followed by the World Cup of Softball.

"It's a really great experience," said Demore, who won the Canada Cup's Showcase Division as a 15-year-old with the Vancouver Wildcats.

"I used to watch this team play when I was little, and now to be playing with them, and to be a part of it, is pretty cool."

Demore didn't play for Canada at last year's event, choosing instead to return to Oregon State for the summer, but she first donned the Maple Leaf jersey at Softball City in 2010, pitching a handful of innings for Canada.

"My first game, I think it was against USA Elite, and I got thrown in for an inning or two. I was really nervous, but it was exciting," she recalled.

"That gave me a lot of confidence, and make me realize I could compete with anybody. I was out there against the best, so now, this year, I have a little bit different mindset.

"I'm definitely a lot more calm now. I've been put in big situations before, at college."

Cater, too, made a good first impression. Last year, at just 16 years old, she became the youngest player to ever suit up for Canada's national squad, when she pitched two innings against high-powered Australia. She did not allow a hit, struck out a pair, and was credited with the win.

And this year, the Maple Ridge native ? who will pitch next year at the University of Washington ? is looking to improve on that performance.

"This year, I have a more mental attitude. Last year, I just threw the ball,? said Cater, a student at North Delta?s Seaquam Secondary. ?I?m more positional with my throws, I watch the batters and see where they like to stand in the box, and study what pitches the left-handed hitters struggle with."

Batters struggled with her fastball a year ago, but she is relying on more than just her speed this season.

?I?ve developed a drop-ball/change-up,? she said earlier this month, before accompanying Team Canada to Oklahoma.

?It?s about 10 miles an hour slower than my fastball, which is good because you have to slow your pitches down every now and then.?

And while the summer is a whirlwind of travel ? from Oklahoma to South Surrey, and later this summer to Whitehorse for the women's world fastpitch championships July 12-22 ? Cater, like Demore, is excited to play in front of family and friends at the Canadian Open.

"Playing at home is so much better, you see people you know in the stands and they support our team,? she said. ?I watched the Canada Cup? when I was a kid, so I always wanted to play in a tournament like this.?

And while Cater and Demore are likely to be relied upon more heavily than in their rookie seasons with the national program, both still rely on the steadying influence of the team's veterans when it comes time to play big games. If she ever finds the nerves getting the best of her in the pitcher's circle, Demore, for example, thinks back to one of the nuggets of advice Cumpstone ? Canada's longtime catcher ? once gave her.

"She just told me to go out there and relax, and have fun. It's not any different ? it's still just a game."

Don?t Go To The Crowded Gym, Go To Your Back Yard To Enjoy Your Swimming Pool and Spa by Riley Hendersen You can just imagine it: after a hard week at work you come home for the weekend, glad to finally not have yet more overtime to deal with, and what better way to sit back and relax than to put on the bathing trunks or swimsuit and sit your home swimming pool and spa. There are few things that are more relaxing than just relaxing in a home swimming pool and spa, and that addition also can drastically increase the value of the property, which is a nice added bonus that goes above and beyond every other benefit. Home swimming pool and spas are a fun addition to any backyard, or that side porch that otherwise would never be used. What backyard haven would be complete without a home swimming pool and spa where you could just relax and forget the problems of the past hours, days, even weeks and simply enjoy the feeling of warm water all over your body, relaxing aching muscles, and drifting the tenseness right out of you? Among all the choices for home improvement options, a home swimming pool and spa is among the most practical and easy to have installed compared to other options. A home swimming pool and spa, sometimes referred to as a pool spa, is similar to traditional hot tubs, in the sense that both use powered jets to create soothing motion in the water. This motion acts in a similar fashion to a massage to relax and comfort the body. A home swimming pool and spa can either be part of an in ground pool design or an above-ground freestanding structure. They can be custom-made to suit your individual desires and needs, or they can be purchased pre-fabricated so that you can easily even put it together yourself if you like the home handyman projects. If you are building an in-ground home

Texas Climate & Carbon Exchange Opens for Global Trading

I know, this almost sounds like a punch line to a bad joke, or perhaps an oxymoron. Many people tend to think of Texans as backward-looking, conservative, entrenched in the status quo and not at all interested in talking about climate change, except maybe to argue that it doesn?t exist. And they didn?t come by that reputation by accident, either. After all, it is the home of George W. Bush and Rick Perry, both of whom have been known to censor information about global warming. But there are two things that Texans understand, perhaps better than most of us and those are: energy and money. And, to a certain extent, in Texas, these issues seem to rise above ideological boundaries. That is why, for instance, Texas is the #1 state in the US in wind power, producing 6,527,850 GWh/yr (as of 2010) almost twice as much as its nearest competitor, Kansas.

Substituting windmills for oil wells is one thing, but carbon trading? One could argue that wind power makes sense here, because of the wide, open prairies and strong steady winds. But carbon trading could be done in Brooklyn. One could argue that because there are so many carbon credits available for trading here from all that wind power, it makes sense to locate it nearby. Or it could just be that Texans, understanding energy and money as they do, saw the opportunity and jumped on it first.

According to Nathan Rockliff, co-founder of Carbon Trade Exchange (CTX), parent company of the newly formed Texas Climate & Carbon Exchange (TCCX), ?Carbon Trade Exchange is proud to establish its first USA trading relationship from a central and strategic market such as Texas. We see the U.S. market as one of the fastest growing for Carbon in the world over the next decade.?

CTX, which is located in Sydney, Australia, has 150 members located in 22 different countries. You can think of it as a kind of stock exchange for the global electronic trading of emissions offsets, also known as carbon credits. TCCX, whose slogan is, ?a new environmentality? is located in Austin and is the sole licensee for the Carbon Trade Exchange for the United States, Canada and Mexico.

According to the CTX website, ?Our platform allows businesses to meet their compliance obligations under the EU Emissions Trading Scheme and voluntarily offset residual carbon emissions to become carbon neutral.?

Emissions trading is already well established in Europe.
