Dealer Pleads Guilty to Smuggling in Largest International Dino Case Ever

A fossil dealer's guilty plea has set the stage for what is most likely the largest dinosaur fossil repatriation in history, according to an attorney representing the President of Mongolia, the country that will receive most of the fossils that federal officials are seizing from fossil dealer and preparer Eric Prokopi.

On Thursday (Dec. 27) Prokopi pleaded guilty to criminal charges related to smuggling fossils and agreed to forfeit a small menagerie of dinosaurs to federal officials. All but one of the dinosaurs in question came from Mongolia, where law makes fossils state property, and among them is a high-profile skeleton that received a $1.05 million bid at auction.

"We have looked into this, and we can't find any instance anywhere when one country has returned to another a lot of dinosaurs this large and this significant that have been looted or smuggled," said Robert Painter, attorney for Mongolian President Elbegdorj?Tsakhia.

The outcome has set precedent in other ways, according to observers and others who are involved in the case. In particular, some believe it will send a message to those involved in the black market for fossils, particularly those taken from Mongolia, which have been widely available for sale.

A long list of dinosaurs

In May, Prokopi put his 8-foot-tall and 24-foot-long (2.4 meters by 7.3 meters) Tarbosaurus bataar specimen up for auction. President Elbegdorj and several paleontologists objected, saying the dinosaur was almost certainly pilfered from Mongolia. The Manhattan U.S. Attorney became involved and sought legal possession of the dinosaur with the intent of returning it to Mongolia and later arresting Prokopi. [See Images of the Smuggled Tarbosaurus Skeleton]

In a plea deal, Prokopi pleaded guilty to three felony counts and agreed to give up his claim on this dinosaur, plus fossils from two other Tarbosaurus bataars, which are Asian relatives of the infamous T. rex; one Saurolophus or duck-billed dinosaur; and two birdlike Oviraptors. In September, federal officials seized another Saurolophus that Prokopi had sold to California-based gallery and auction houseI.M. Chait. A small four-winged Microraptor from China was taken by federal officials before this case began. One of the Tarbosaurus fossils is believed to be in Great Britain.

"We are pleased that we can now begin the process of returning these prehistoric fossils to their countries of origin," Preet Bharara, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, said in a statement.

Prokopi's prospects

After pleading guilty to charges of smuggling, making false statements on customs forms and dealing in fossils he knew to be illegal, Prokopi faces a maximum of 17 years in prison and a substantial fine. However, his defense attorney Georges Lederman said he believes it is highly unlikely Prokopi will receive anything close to the maximum sentence.

"We are confident that the sentence imposed will be a fair and reasonable one and will take into account all the proactive measures my client has made," Lederman said, noting that Prokopi has cooperated with investigators and, as part of his plea deal, will continue to do so.

The outcome of the case disappointed David Herskowitz, an independent natural history consultant. While employed by auction house Heritage Auctions, Herskowitz arranged for the sale of Prokopi's Tarbosaurus.

"I know Eric, and I know he is not a criminal," Herskowitz said. "I don't believe he knowingly broke any laws, and I believe the only reason why he had to cop a plea was financial and the pressures [of being involved in a court case]."

Prokopi spent a year preparing the Tarbosaurus fossils, which were once rough fossils that made up about 75 percent of a skeleton, to create a complete, mounted specimen with the intent of selling it at auction, Herskowitz said. But the $1 million sale was never completed.

Since releasing a statement in June, in which he described himself as "just a guy in Gainesville, Florida trying to support my family, not some international bone smuggler," Prokopi has been silent.

At roughly the same time federal officials seized the Tarbosaurus bataar, fossils of probable Mongolian origin were easily found in auction catalogs and on eBay. Herskowitz noted that he has seen Mongolian fossils for sale during the 20 years he has been working in the field.

"Mongolia never stepped forward to do anything about the buying and selling of Mongolian fossils, and that was the reason why everyone felt it was legal and OK," Herskowitz said.

A legal question

With the deal still fresh, not everyone agrees about its legal implications. An important issue in the case was the relationship between Mongolian law ? which Prokopi?s civil attorneys said did not clearly make fossils state property ? and U.S. law. This is important because prosecutors were basing the claim that the fossils were stolen on Mongolian law, however, Prokopi was being prosecuted under U.S. law.

From Herskowitz?s perspective, the plea deal doesn?t resolve this issue, but the ambiguity will likely change the market.

??I would believe that no one should be selling Mongolian fossils until this whole thing is resolved,? he said.

Ricardo St. Hilaire, an attorney who practices cultural law, disagreed, saying that the deal created a foundation for using Mongolian law on cultural property to invoke U.S. law on stolen property.

"This conviction should signal to those of us in the legal community and to anybody in the collecting community that Mongolian law has served as the basis to trigger the National Stolen Property Act," St. Hilaire said. Prokopi pleaded guilty to one count of violating this law. [Faux Real: A Gallery of Art Forgeries]

The case and its outcome signal the willingness of the Manhattan U.S. Attorney to pursue cultural property cases, said St. Hilaire, who has been following the case and writing about it on his blog.

Robert Painter, attorney for the Mongolian President, put the significance in more blunt terms: "Smugglers like Eric Prokopi used to think they could do this with impunity. Now they realize this is very serious."

The Mongolian reaction

Mongolian officials have announced plans to establish a temporary facility in the central square of the capital Ulaanbataar to display the dinosaurs once they return, Painter said.

"President Elbegdorj and Mongolians are so grateful for what the U.S. government has done, there is just a tremendous amount of excitement," he said.

The dinosaur's saga from auction block to courtroom has captured Mongolians' attention: A Mongolian media company, shuud.mn, named the dinosaur's story the top event of the year, said Bolorsetseg Minjin, a Mongolian paleontologist who has advocated for the return the dinosaur.

"It is not only on the news, just talking to the people in Mongolia, they really want to know what is going on with the whole case," Minjin said.

Mongolian officials are investigating the illicit trade within their own borders as well, Painter said.

Manchester United forward Robin van Persie sees huge activity boost to Official PFA Facebook page after impressive performance against Newcastle, say Digital Sports Group

(PRWEB UK) 29 December 2012

Digital Sports Group head of operations Matthew Tait has said the recent on field heroics of Manchester United's ?24 million acquisition have made a huge impact to the striker's Official PFA Facebook page, with the total amount of 'People talking about' increasing by over 30% week on week. The Facebook page has become a thriving hub for the Manchester United striker since its launch and is becoming more and more popular with each week that passes, with a rapidly growing community of fans keen to hear all the latest news on their favourite player. The official PFA Facebook page, along with Robin van Persie player profile on football.co.uk, provide the only online location of the official PFA biography, lifetime stats, news and high resolution gallery.

After listening to 'the little boy inside' him and moving to Manchester United, Robin Van Persie has been prolific in-front of goal, scoring 11 goals in 16 Premier League games for the Manchester giants, and getting the Red Devils out of some sticky situations in the process.

The Manchester United front man has made a string of impressive performances in recent weeks for the Red Devils and helped get United out of another sticky situation against Newcastle on Boxing Day. Sir Alex Ferguson's men had to come from behind three times to earn victory against The Magpies. Robin van Persie was once again indispensable for United, providing an assist and scoring a vital equaliser to make it 3-3 for the Red Devils before team mate Javier Hernandez netted the winner on 90 minutes.

Head of Operations at DSG, Matthew Tait had this to say, ?Robin van Persie really has no shortage of fans after his performances for Manchester United this season and we can see that by the success of his PFA Facebook page. All of us here at Digital Sports Group are proud we've had the opportunity to work with The PFA to give the fans a fantastic and unique fan resource for Robin van Persie.?

DSG became the official digital partner of the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) earlier this year and have since launched a number of Player profile fan pages on social media site Facebook as well as providing official player pages on their football news site football.co.uk.

Car bomb attempt on Northern Irish policeman foiled

BELFAST (Reuters) - An attempt by militant nationalists to kill a Northern Irish policeman was foiled when a booby trap bomb was found under his car, police said on Sunday.

The attack was the latest by splinter groups of Irish republicans opposed to British rule of the province and a 1998 peace agreement that ended 30 years of sectarian conflict.

It came two months after the first murder of a prison officer in almost 20 years and followed two weeks of rioting by pro-British loyalists protesting against restrictions on the flying of Britain's union flag from Belfast City Hall.

The bomb was discovered under the policeman's car near the Northern Irish parliament in east Belfast. His home and those of his neighbors were evacuated while army bomb disposal experts defused the device.

"Obviously there are people out there who are still intent on causing murder and mayhem. Attacks on police officers are attacks on the entire community and cannot be allowed to continue," Assistant Chief Constable George Hamilton said in a statement.

"Our belief is that this attempted murder was carried out by those opposed to peace from within dissident republicanism. They don't care who they attack, they don't care who they kill."

More than 3,600 people were killed in Northern Ireland when Catholic nationalists seeking union with Ireland fought British security forces and mainly Protestant loyalists determined to remain part of the United Kingdom.

Militant nationalists have stepped up attacks in recent years. As well as last month's killing of the prison officer, two soldiers and a policeman were shot dead in March 2009 and another policeman was killed by a car bomb in April 2010.

Auto sales to end year strong, "fiscal cliff" may weigh

DETROIT (Reuters) - U.S. auto sales are expected to show a rise of 9 percent for December, capping off the best year for the industry since 2007, fueled by easier access to credit, rising home prices and pent-up demand.

But when major automakers report December sales next Thursday, a strong end to the year could be overshadowed by concerns that consumers will curb spending in January due to the "fiscal cliff."

U.S. consumer confidence fell to a four-month low in December on worries over the $600 billion in automatic spending cuts and tax increases that take effect unless Congress acts to stop them.

Overall, 2012 sales are expected to finish at 14.5 million vehicles, more than 13 percent higher than the previous year. This marks the third straight year that the industry has posted a double-digit sales gain.

Gains in 2013 are expected to slow to single-digit growth, with several analysts forecasting only modest improvements in U.S. consumer confidence and employment.

Kelley Blue Book said a tax increase for middle-income households could hold back sales growth through 2013 and beyond.

However, most analysts said the looming deadline did not hamper sales in December. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters forecast that December's annual sales pace will be around 15.2 million vehicles, helped in part by higher incentive spending on full-sized pickup trucks.

"Given relative strength in consumer sentiment post last month's election - even in spite of the fiscal cliff - and improvements in labor data, we expect healthy retail demand to spur a strong month," Barclays Capital analyst Brian Johnson said.

Auto sales are an early indicator each month of U.S. consumer demand and industry executives have pointed to the improving housing market and consumer confidence as reasons for optimism in 2013. Higher home prices can help American car shoppers feel wealthier and translate to higher auto sales, industry research firm Edmunds.com said.

In addition, the average age of cars on the road has risen to just above 11 years, and industry experts say that will continue to drive demand.

According to TrueCar.com data, large trucks had an average discount of 11.4 percent in December, 75 percent higher than the overall industry discount of 6.5 percent. Analysts said General Motors Co in particular layered on incentives to cut its inventory ahead of its introduction of 2014-model trucks in the second quarter of 2013.

"All eyes will be on the full-size pickup segment where GM clearly got more aggressive to draw down their 139 days of inventory," RBC Capital Markets analyst Joseph Spak said in a research note.

The preferred level in the auto industry is about 80 days of supply for full-sized pickup trucks like GM's Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. Ford Motor Co had 89 days of supply for its F-Series pickup trucks.

The industry also got a boost from sales that were delayed due to Hurricane Sandy.

Johnson estimated that 25,000 to 30,000 vehicles sold this month were delayed from November due to Superstorm Sandy, which ravaged the U.S. Northeast the month before. The storm prompted many car shoppers to shift their purchases, adding about 300,000 to the annualized sales pace for December.

"We note, however, that we do not expect post-storm replacement demand to persist much beyond January," Johnson said.

Alto from AOL Visually Organizes Your Email into Neat Stacks (and We've Got Invites)

Alto from AOL Visually Organizes Your Email into Neat Stacks (and We've Got Invites)Alto is a new web-based email client from AOL (yes, the folks best known for "You've got mail!"). In addition to syncing with Aol Mail, the service syncs with Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, and even iCloud to make your inbox more attractive.

Alto from AOL Visually Organizes Your Email into Neat Stacks (and We've Got Invites)The most notable feature of Alto is its "Stacks" arrangement of particular emails. Stacks are essentially filters for your inbox that are arranged in neat squares. Alto sets up some Stacks for you, pulling emails from daily deals sites, retailers, and social notifications all in their own groups. Clicking on one of those Stacks brings you to a tab where the emails are arranged in a grid. Alto also crawls your email to find all the photos and attachments and filter those into Stacks.

You can create your own Stack by dragging an email from the message list to a blank square. That will set up a filter from that sender, but you can add other senders to the Stack and, under options, add additional settings (e.g., subject words).

Alto from AOL Visually Organizes Your Email into Neat Stacks (and We've Got Invites)Emails are presented in a scrolling list on the left, with quick action icons beneath each to delete, star, or snooze each message (a handy feature). You can also perform batch actions with the little actions button at the top.

Alto from AOL Visually Organizes Your Email into Neat Stacks (and We've Got Invites)Gmail shortcuts work here, your own labels are shown as folders, there are links to Google Drive and Calendar (if you like Gmail), and if you connect Facebook, you can get status updates from your friends here as well.

I experienced one issue with syncing, after not having used the service for a few weeks. However, that seemed to fix itself after I logged in again and waited a bit. The developers say they're actively working on improving sync performance, with a big update coming next week.

All in all, I found the webmail client to be fluid and easy to use. Its attractive design is like a breath of fresh air compared to just seeing a giant list of emails and labels in Gmail.

If you have a lot of email add-ons or labs set up, Alto, like other email clients, might not be for you. But if you want a fresher look for your inbox, give Alto a try.

A note on security: For Gmail accounts, Alto uses OAuth to get an access token, so it doesn't get your Gmail password. For other accounts, you do need to enter your passwords, which the AOL/Alto team says are heavily encrypted. Some limited account data (email metadata, up to 60-day cache of photos, etc.) are stored on their servers. You can read more about Alto's security and privacy measures here.

Alto was announced a little while ago, but is in private beta right now. Lifehacker readers can get in now with the SurveyMonkey link below (the first 5,000 will get in within 24-48 hours; after that, others will be approved a little bit later.)

Tea & Pregnancy | Eat Drink Better

tea and preganancy

Not all herbal teas are safe when you?re pregnant, but many are A-OK! So, what?s the skinny on tea & pregnancy?

When I was in my first trimester, I had just settled in with a nice cup of chamomile tea for my new favorite pastime: reading all about pregnancy! After ten or 15 minutes of idle googling, I ran across a forum posts (I can?t remember where it was now) where a group of women were saying that some herbal teas weren?t safe during pregnancy!

What?

I knew that you?re supposed to limit caffeine intake to 200-300mg per day (about 1 cup of coffee), but what could possibly be wrong with herbal tea?? I spit my chamomile back into the mug and spent the evening worried that I?d harmed my baby.

It?s been about four months since that scary moment. Since then, I?ve talked to my doctor and done a lot of research on what teas are and aren?t safe in pregnancy. It turns out that in general, teas are pretty safe. There are thousands of teas out there, so if your favorite tea isn?t on this list, drop a comment and I?ll see what I can find out for you! Just like with exercise and pregnancy, you can also talk to your doctor. Not all conventional doctors will know about different teas and how they can affect pregnancy, but it?s worth asking!

Safe Teas for Pregnancy

Herbal tea in moderation is fine in pregnancy, but don?t overdo it! Stick to one mug a day to be on the safe side, maybe two mugs, if you space them out throughout the day.

  • raspberry leaf ? Not only is this tea safe, but it has all kinds of micronutrients that are great for your growing baby!
  • black or green tea ? These teas (on their own) are not herbal, so they are safe to consume. Just watch that caffeine intake! Some caffeine is OK, but you don?t want more than 300mg per day. Some research suggests you limit to 200mg per day. Black and green teas are very low in caffeine compared to coffee, so making the switch can be an easy way to stay below these limits.
  • ginger ? Don?t overdo it on the ginger tea, but the occasional mug is fine, and it can even help with that first trimester nausea!
  • peppermint leaf ? Peppermint can also help with nausea.
  • Rooibos ? Full of antioxidants, this tea is great for pregnancy
  • lemon balm ? This can help with some of that preganany anxiety.
  • fennel ? Fennel tea is safe only in small amounts, so if you?re going to drink fennel stick to a tea blend where it?s not the main event. Small doses of fennel during pregnancy can help with swelling.
  • citrus teas ? Teas made from citrus peels are safe during pregnancy. One exception is lemongrass, which is not safe. Lemongrass is not made from a citrus peel, but since the name makes it sound like it could be, I thought it was worth mentioning here.

Teas to Avoid During Pregnancy

These teas can stimulate the uterus, causing contractions or otherwise possibly harm your growing baby. Again, this isn?t a comprehensive list. If there?s a tea that?s not on this list, ask away, and I?ll see what I can dig up for you!

  • chamomile ? Turns out that spitting out that chamomile was a good idea. While small amounts might be OK, chamomile is a strong anti-inflammatory, and you should avoid chamomile during pregnancy for the same reasons your doctor tells you not to take aspirin.
  • hibiscus ? Hibiscus tea may be linked to miscarriage. This is not well-tested, but better to err on the side of caution!
  • ma huang ? This is a powerful stimulant and not good for your baby.
  • stinging nettle leaf ? The trick with stinging nettle tea is that the root in moderation is OK, but the leaf is not safe during pregnancy. If your pregnancy tea just says ?stinging nettle? in the ingredients, you might want to check that it?s the root and not the leaves before you drink up
  • black and blue cohosh ? These are actually sometimes used to induce labor, so avoid, avoid, avoid!
  • don quai ? Another strong stimulant to avoid.
  • lemongrass ? Considered unsafe during pregnancy.
  • ephedra ? A powerful stimulant. Seeing a trend here?
  • ginseng ? Another stimulant that?s not so great for you or your baby during pregnancy
  • licorice root ? Experts say to avoid licorice tea during pregnancy.
  • penny royal ? This herb is actually sometimes used to intentionally induce miscarriage. Avoid!!
  • St. John?s wort ? This is a powerful medicinal and you should not take it during pregnancy.
  • yarrow ? Another tea that?s linked to miscarriages.

You might have noticed a few food items on this no-go list, like lemongrass and licorice. Does that mean you should skip foods that contain these ingredients? Not necessarily! Teas are much more concentrated than the amount of lemongrass in that cup of tom kha soup or licorice in candy. Talk to your doctor, but eating these in food form is different from drinking them as teas.

Cambodia court sends "scapegoats" back to jail for unionist murder

PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - A Cambodian court ordered the return to prison on Thursday of two men seen by rights groups as scapegoats for the 2005 murder of a top unionist, the latest controversial ruling in a country chided for its low judicial standards.

The Appeals Court upheld a lower court's handing down of 20-year jail terms for Born Samnang and Sok Sam Oeun for killing Free Trade Union (FTU) leader Chea Vichea, despite weak evidence.

Following a public outcry, the Supreme Court released the two on bail in 2008 after three years in jail to allow further investigation. The Appeals Court on Thursday made no mention of any new evidence against them.

"Please help me, this is very unjust," Born Samnang shouted as he was taken away by police. He wept and said he would seek help from King Norodom Sihamoni to clear his name.

Cambodia's positive image among investors as one of Asia's most promising emerging economies and a cheaper alternative to China is being dented by allegations of rampant rights abuses and political interference in the judiciary to silence dissent or allow well-connected figures to walk free.

Violence against union leaders is not uncommon in Cambodia and activists say scapegoats have been found to ensure those instigating the attacks go unpunished.

As Cambodia's $4.2 billion garment manufacturing sector grows, unions and workers are becoming increasingly emboldened, holding protests and strikes over pay and working conditions.

Rights groups were incensed last week when a local politician connected with the ruling party was cleared by a court of firing bullets into a crowd of striking factory workers earlier this year, wounding three women.

Chea Mony, the current FTU president and brother of the late Chea Vichea, said he was shocked by Thursday's ruling and criticized the authorities for failing to bring the real culprits to justice.

"We have not seen any light of justice at all in this case," Chea Mony told Reuters. "The court is well aware of what's going on and that it lacks its independence."

Sandy Tops List of 2012 Extreme Weather & Climate Events ...

By Andrew Freedman, Michael Lemonick, and Dan Yawitz

From unprecedented heat waves that shattered "Dust Bowl" era records from the 1930s, to Hurricane Sandy, which devastated coastal New Jersey and New York, 2012 was the year Mother Nature had it out for the U.S. No country on Earth rivaled the U.S. in 2012 in terms of extreme weather and climate events, as one rare episode after another rocked the country.

Many served to highlight the growing role that global warming may be playing in tipping the odds in favor of high-impact weather events.

The statistics are staggering: The first half of the year was so warm that by early August, the U.S. had already exceeded the number of record-high temperatures set or tied during all of 2011. July 2012 was the hottest month on record in the U.S., as a desiccating drought enveloped the majority of the lower 48 states, stretching its misery from California to Delaware.

The drought has been the most extensive this country has seen since the 1930s. Ranchers were forced to sell off their herds as their fields turned to dust and the price of feed rose steeply; the Mississippi River neared a record-low level, threatening to curtail commerce; and drought-fueled wildfires consumed tens of thousands of acres across the West and threatened a large population center in Colorado Springs.

More than any other event this year, though, Hurricane Sandy brought the subject of climate change to the forefront, with politicians of all stripes expressing new-found interest in taking action after seeing the?impacts of the storm.

By the end of 2012 a scientific, and more importantly, a public consensus had emerged that global warming was making its presence felt. This landmark shift in the conversation revolved around the now hard-to-refute recognition that a warming planet means certain types of extreme events are more likely to occur and are more damaging when they do. It also kick-started a discussion about what action is needed to make the country more resilient to extreme weather and climate events, and how to reduce long-term global warming.

Here is our list of the top 10 extreme weather and climate events of 2012, our third annual year-end review. Our ranking system takes into account each event's severity, societal impact, unusualness (was it a relatively routine occurrence or something that stands alone in recorded history?), and the potential ramifications the event suggests for the climate system as a whole.

(AP) ? At Egypt's Pyramids, the desperation of vendors to sell can be a little frightening for some tourists.

Young men descend on any car with foreigners in it blocks before it reaches the more than 4,500 year-old Wonder of the World. They bang on car doors and hoods, some waving the sticks and whips they use for driving camels, demanding the tourists come to their shop or ride their camel or just give money.

In the southern city of Aswan, tour operator Ashraf Ibrahim was recently taking a group to a historic mosque when a mob of angry horse carriage drivers trapped them inside, trying to force them to take rides. The drivers told Ibrahim to steer business their way in the future or else they'd burn his tourist buses, he said.

Egypt's touts have always been aggressive ? but they're more desperate than ever after nearly two years of devastation in the tourism industry, a pillar of the economy.

December, traditionally the start of Egypt's peak season, has brought new pain. Many foreigners stayed away because of the televised scenes of protests and clashes on the streets of Cairo in the battle over a controversial constitution.

Arrivals this month were down 40 percent from November, according to airport officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

Tourism workers have little hope that things will get better now that the constitution came into effect this week after a nationwide referendum. The power struggle between Islamist President Mohammed Morsi and the opposition threatens to erupt at any time into more unrest in the streets.

More long term, many in the industry worry ruling Islamists will start making changes like banning alcohol or swimsuits on beaches that they fear will drive tourists away.

"Nobody can plan anything because one day you find that everything might be OK and another that everything is lost. You can't even take a right decision or plan for the next month," said Magda Fawzi, head of Sabena Management.

She's thinking of shutting down her company, which runs two hotels in the Red Sea resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh and four luxury cruise boats on the Nile between the ancient cities of Luxor and Aswan. In one hotel, only 10 of 300 rooms are booked, and only one of her ships is operating, she said. She has already downsized from 850 employees before the revolution to 500.

"I don't think there will be any stability with this kind of constitution. People will not accept it," she said.

Tourism, one of Egypt's biggest foreign currency earners, was gutted by the turmoil of last year's 18-day uprising that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Scared off by the upheaval, the number of tourists fell to 9.8 million in 2011 from 14.7 million the year before, and revenues plunged 30 percent to $8.8 billion.

This year, the industry struggled back. By the end of September, 8.1 million tourists had come, injecting $10 billion into the economy. The number for the full year is likely to surpass 2011 but is still considerably down from 2010.

For the public, it has meant a drying up of income, given that tourism provided direct or indirect employment to one in eight Egyptians in 2010, according to government figures.

Poverty swelled at the country's fastest rate in Luxor province, highly dependent on visitors to its monumental temples and the tombs of King Tutankamun and other pharaohs. In 2011, 39 percent of its population lived on less than $1 a day, compared to 18 percent in 2009, according to government figures.

For the government, the fall in tourism and foreign investment since the revolution has worsened a debt crisis and forced talks with the International Monetary Fund over a $4.8 billion loan.

Morsi has promised to expand tourism, but hotel owners and tour operators say he has yet to make clear any plans.

Their biggest fear is new violence causing shocks like December's. Ibrahim, of the Eagle Travels tourism company, said that because of this month's protests, two German operators he works with cancelled tours. They weren't even heading to Cairo, but to the Red Sea, Luxor and Aswan, far from the unrest.

But some in the industry fear that, with the constitution's provisions strengthening implementation of Shariah, Islamists will ban alcohol or restrict dress on Egypt's beaches, which rival antiquities sites as draws for tourism. Officials from the Muslim Brotherhood, from which Morsi hails, are vague about any plans.

Ultraconservative Salafis, who are key allies of Morsi, have been more direct.

Nader Bakkar, spokesman for the Salafi Nour Party, told a conference of tour guides in Aswan earlier this month that tourists should not be allowed to buy alcohol but could bring it with them and drink it in their rooms. Tourists should also be encouraged to wear conservative dress, he said.

"We welcome all tourists but we tell them ... there are traditions and beliefs in the country, so respect them," he said. "Most tourists will have no problem if you tell them" to bring their own alcohol.

One Salafi sheik earlier this year said the Pyramids and Sphinx should be demolished as anti-Islamic ? like Afghanistan's then-Taliban rulers destroyed monumental Buddha statues in 2001. Bakkar dismissed the comments as the opinion of one cleric.

But tour guide Gladys Haddad sees the Salafis' attitude as a threat, saying the constitution should have said more to protect Egypt's pharaonic heritage. "We are talking about a civilization that they do not acknowledge. They see it as idolatrous."

"Why would a tourist come to a resort if he can't drink?" said Fawzi, of Sabena Management. "People are coming for tours and monuments, and to relax on the boats. If they feel that restriction, why should they come?"

Nahla Mofied of Escapade Travels said the Islamists might restrict what tourists can "wear and do" but, given its importance to the economy, "they may not destroy tourism fully."

Complicating attempts to draw tourists back is the lawlessness gripping Egypt the past two years. With police supervision low, tourist touts increasingly assault guides and even tourists to demand business. In September, 150 tour guides held a protest against attacks by vendors.

"We have struggled with this problem since before the revolution, but now the situation is completely out of control," Ibrahim said.

At the Giza Pyramids, police seem indifferent to the touts. Camel-riding police even join in, pushing tourists to take rides.

Gomaa al-Gabri, an antiquities employee, was infuriated at the sight, shouting, "You sons of dogs" and a slew of other insults at a policeman trying to get money off a tourist.

"They're trying to take away my income," said the father of 11. "In Mubarak's time we wouldn't dare talk to them like this. Now I can hit him with a shoe on his head and he can't speak."

For some tourists at the Pyramids, the chaos is part of the experience.

"I just love it," British tourist Brian Wilson said. "You can't blame people wanting to make money."

Fiscal Cliff: Obama Returning to DC

HONOLULU, Hawaii - With the country barreling towards the "fiscal cliff," President Obama is interrupting his Hawaiian holiday vacation to return to the gridlock in Washington.

The president will depart Hawaii for Washington late Wednesday, the White House announced today. The first lady and daughters, Malia and Sasha, will remain on their vacation.

Obama told reporters last week that he is a "hopeless optimist" and continues to believe a budget deal can be reached before broad tax increases and steep spending cuts kick in on Jan. 1, threatening to plunge the nation back into a recession. House Speaker John Boehner has admitted "God only knows" the solution to the standoff.

With the deadline less than a week away, lawmakers are also due to be back in Washington on Thursday. Obama's return was expected. He told reporters at the White House Friday that he would "see you next week."

The president spent Christmas with friends and family at his vacation house in Kailua, a cozy beach town on the east coast of Oahu.

Technological Advancements in Communications

Messages from parts unknown to us are an everyday occurrence. They form a large part of the correspondence we usually get as we go about our daily lives. At work, we get them from contacts, coworkers and customers. At home, we get them from friends and loved ones. We usually have no idea where they may be at certain times of the day but we get the message just the same. Mobility in terms of communication, work and telecom devices have become so relative that if you were to pinpoint exact message sources in terms of physical location at any given time --- just give up. You don't have to. As long as you receive the message you need when you need it most, that?s it. Parts unknown to us can be virtual or real world. They make up most of what we use now such as:

????????? Business VoIP. The online phone systems in your office that allows you to make and receive calls. Internet fax and voicemail messages also get through the PBX to reach your mailbox or smartphone. It?s a highly reliable system and a truly efficient one. Companies big and small use it to their advantage via toll free or local numbers from service providers like RingCentral.

????????? SMS and MMS. You get a lot of text messages and multimedia messages (pics and vids) on your smartphone everyday. Most of them from coworkers and contacts and some of them from unheard of companies promoting products or services.

????????? Mobile apps. Information apps channel websites with relevant information to you on your personalized info app. These are messages more comprehensive and in-depth compared to the usual messages you get from parts unknown. Although you know what info app you use, from where it gets the info it provides you --- that?s what you have no precise idea about. It is interactive and instantly gratifying.

From Known Sources

Messages from sources known to us are those you regularly get from retail companies and service providers. Sometimes there will be urgent messages from friends and loved ones whom you know to be spending a lot of the time in one particular place only. Messages from such companies, people or groups of people are messages from immovable entities such as:

????????? Snail mail. The most archaic but nevertheless still reliable. Slow but sure is how it goes. Yes, there still are companies that need to use such corresponding methods like retailers mailing junk mail or packages; utility companies and retailers sending you bills to pay; loved ones sending you letters or greeting cards. The legal system sending you jury duty summons. This is the old school.

????????? Phonecalls. Either via home phones, office IP phones, mobile phones, smartphones or PC softphones, you get to know call sources once they tell you or when you ask them. This is how the usual telephone conversation begins. You ask who and from where.

????????? Telegraph. Just as archaic as the snail mail but also just as reliable. Shorter messages can be found here. Mostly urgent ones.

????????? Courier. The snail mail?s cousin although the messages you get are usually of the boxed kind like packages, crates, satchels, and the like. Retail companies customarily send stuff over to you for delivery via courier.

????????? Traditional media. Print, TV and radio send you messages in the form of news, shows and entertainment. Production-intensive and broadcast-oriented and meant for everyone to enjoy. It is impersonal and can be biased and manipulative at times.

From Technology Ambiguous To Us

Some technologies are simply too big an idea for most of us to grasp but nevertheless, we come to know them by the benefits they offer. These are satellite broadcast communications, fiber-optic cable TV, Internet livestream, cellular phone tech, radio electronic and cloud tech communications. We?ve heard about them so we think we know. However, these are high-tech message senders that sound like magic to us owing to our collective ignorance about them. We can choose to be informed if we like to and begin to understand their usefulness better. Otherwise, we can just think about such tech as some kind of otherworldly messenger like the owl from Hogwarts.

Dakar mosque lit up for Christmas in Senegal

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) ? After prayers at the mosque, Ibrahim Lo is off to do some last-minute Christmas shopping. Soon he is eyeing the rows of dolls wrapped in plastic bags on a wooden table as he searches for gifts for his four children.

A bouquet of inflatable Santa toys tied to a nearby tree bobs in the air at this outdoor market in the seaside capital as he makes his picks.

It looks a lot like Christmas in Senegal, where 95 percent of the 12.8 million residents are Muslim. Even the Grande Mosquee, a mosque that dominates the city's skyline, is aglow in holiday lights.

"When they go to school, the children learn about Santa," says Lo, wearing a flowing olive green robe known as a boubou. "We are born into the Senegalese tradition of cohabitation between Muslims and Christians. What is essential is the respect between people."

Senegal, a moderate country along Africa's western coast, has long been a place where Christians and Muslims have coexisted peacefully. Most Christians here are Catholic and live in the south of country and in the capital.

Hadim Thiam, 30, normally sells shoes but during December he's expanded to an elaborate spread of tinsel, cans of spray snow and fireworks.

"It's not linked to God. It's for the children," says Jean Mouss, 55, a Christian out shopping for holiday decorations at Thiam's stand. "We wish Muslims a Merry Christmas and invite them into our homes for the holiday."

Signs of Christmas are prevalent in this tropical seaside capital.

Green and flocked plastic trees of every size are sold on street corners alongside Nescafe carts and vendors splitting open coconuts. "My First Christmas" baby sleepers are folded neatly on the top of the piles of second-hand clothing for sale on the streets. There are French "buches de Noel" and chocolate snowmen for sale in the upscale patisseries.

At lunchtime, a chorus of schoolchildren singing "Silent Night" echoes across a courtyard. The main cathedral is now a spectacle of lights each night ? no easy feat for a city often subjected to power cuts.

Still, not everyone in Senegal thinks embracing Christmas is all in good cheer. Mouhamed Seck, a Quranic teacher and imam for a mosque in a Dakar suburb, says taking part in the holiday is supporting a non-Muslim's religion.

"Islam forbids Muslims from taking part in these festivities," he says.

Parents who celebrate Christmas, though, say it's a secular time to celebrate with their families on a national holiday.

"To make my two children happy, I buy gifts for them and ask their mother to prepare a very hearty meal but we don't go to Mass," says Oumar Fall, 46, who has a 10-year-old and a 13-year-old.

Santa Claus, known in this former French colony as Pere Noel, also makes the rounds at upscale shopping centers and grocery stores in the weeks before Christmas.

Mamadou Sy, 40, had been working at a hotel in Morocco until his visa recently expired. Now back in Senegal, he's making extra money this December as a Santa at the seaside Magicland amusement park.

Like children everywhere, some are frightened by him, but most just want pictures ? and presents.

"Senegal is a unique case where 5 percent of the country is Christian," he says, seeking shade while wearing his red fur costume and hat. "Christians celebrate Muslim holidays and Muslims celebrate Christian holidays."

The tradition even extends to Senegalese schools. Therese Angelique Soumare's students all get together for a Christmas party the weekend before the holiday with their parents. The teachers put presents under a tree and Santa Claus shows up to hand them out.

"Everyone celebrates because it's for the children. Here in Senegal we are good neighbors," she says as she picks out gifts for the party. "We sing, we dance and we love seeing the children's joy."
