Basics of Personal Finance

The basics of personal finance include banking, saving, investing and budgeting.

As you already know, Odd Cents focuses on providing the best personal finance and lifestyle tips, which can help you to get your finances in order and still enjoy your life. When I first started this blog, I wanted to find the most important personal finance basics. During my research, I came across lots of areas which are important to the broad topic of personal finance. The nine areas that I settled on can be called the backbones of personal finance because they impact almost every area of your life. They are:

  • Banking
  • Saving
  • Investing
  • Insurance
  • Retirement
  • Credit cards
  • Budgeting
  • Debt
  • Spending

As you can see, personal finance is a lot more than just about how to spend and save your money. It encompasses other important areas such as banking, insurance, retirement, credit cards and debt. Budgeting is also an important tool that can be used to monitor your spending and saving habits. Investing is another method of saving, which can significantly grow your money, as long as everything goes right. From these we then branch off into lots of other categories (I?ll discuss these later).

In my reading and research, these are the areas that people are interested in. It?s not surprising, because these are the aspects that are impacted by the existence of money. When you think about it, everything revolves around money and when you have very little of it or none of it, life can be quite uncomfortable. So, how you manage your money should be of great importance.

If you?re struggling to get your finances in order, you are not alone. I have periods where I find it difficult to make ends meet to my liking. But by understanding what my needs were and budgeting for them, it?s a lot easier to control my financial habits. If you know someone who needs help with their personal finances, encourage them to read Odd Cents.
