Ryan's life /// A picture of family, fatherhood, and creativity ? Alec ...

I spent yesterday afternoon with my fabulous parents! They drove down from Bellingham for a Pacific Science Center event. I was able to grab lunch with them for a few hours. It was so nice, we sat chatted, I told them about my trip to Uganda, was caught up on things at home. I received an email from my Step-mom Randi this morning, she was commenting on how wonderful yesterday was, and she shared a timelapse video of Bellingham that she came across. I immediately clicked on it to and was brought to Ryan Gilbert?s vimeo page. While I?ve never met Ryan, have never heard of him before, I was touched by one of his videos this morning.

The timelapse video was pretty remarkable, as a fellow time-lapser it excited me to get outside to get more images. However it was another video that I watched by him called ?Reckless Abandon? that really made me happy.
Ryan is a firefighter, married, with I believe two boys. He spends alot of his time outdoors. Reckless Abandon is a video of his boys, simply put. Their exploits in and around Bellingham. For me, the video painted an amazing picture of family and fatherhood. One I wish and pray I?d be able to have one day. The love Ryan has for his boys, his desire to be in their lives, care, attention, and just being their dad. Well I want to be that kind of dad.

I know I just watched a video, and yes, I can be carried by emotion pretty easily, people call me dramatic. But Ryan?s a great dad in my opinion. He?s creative, and has a wonderful family. I don?t know him, probably won?t ever, and to be honest might forget him by next week. However I do believe God puts gems into our lives, ideas and pictures of our future that we hold tightly. Perhaps its because they become the truest form of his love we can experience apart from the love of Christ. Desires for marriage, for family, for children.

I love my earthly fathers, for their triumphs and their failures. They?ve loved me uniquely. However Christ?s love was not present in my household growing up. So this is my gem, the prize I hold onto. I want to be a father in Jesus. I want my life to change the legacy of my family. That Jesus Christ, his perfect love will be the foundation of my family. It will be the source of strength and of love for me being a father.

I was touched by Ryan?s picture of his life, being a father. It caused me to reflect on the desires I have for my future family, and how i want Jesus to be the center, the source, the foundation for it.
