One, its size and price -- the $99 box, which plugs into a TV, is the size of a Rubik's cube. Two, its choice of operating system -- it runs the same Android OS which powers smartphones and tablets. And three -- its rise to fame on Kickstarter, where it shattered records and received millions of dollars in funding not from venture capitalists, but from gamers who wanted to see it made.http://news.yahoo.com/gamestick-size-usb-memory-stick-plug-tv-190300176.htmlFri, 04 Jan 2013 14:03:00 -0500Yahoo! But one thing that Apple has had on its side has been the propensity of iPhone owners to consume far more content than Android phone owners. One argument has been that it does not matter if iPhone has a 5% share vs. Android?s 40% share if Apple (AAPL) still dominates in? app revenue generation and browsing volume. Content is king. Another argument is that it does not matter who moves the most units, since only hardware margins count. Here Apple reigns supreme. Exhibit A is Android engineer Dan Morrill, who posted pictures on his Google+ page this week showing his original stand-in concept art for Google?s (GOOG) Android logo that he prepared for a presentation. In short, Morrill?s sketches are terrifying. Instead of the cute little green ?bug man? Android logo that we?ve all come to love over the past few years, Morrill depicted a menacing, crazy-eyed deathbot that looks as though it was found drawn on the walls of a remote Siberian Soviet-era insane asylum. Over at Unwired View, Brian S. Hall writes that the ?X Phone? that Google and Motorola are reportedly working on is much more of a shot across Samsung?s bow than the iPhone?s. Hall reasons that Google?s intention to create a phone with Motorola signals that the company wants to exert more direct influence over its Nexus smartphone brand since Google would have ?complete control over the development, distribution and marketing? of any device produced with a company that it owns. That slide has pretty much continued ever since and yesterday?s survey found Motorola?s share dropping another 0.8 percentage points to 10.4%. It may seem that LG (066570) has suffered a wipe-out in the U.S. market over the past years, but LG?s share has actually slid just 3.4 points since November 2010. Motorola?s share has crashed by 6.6 points. It?s not hard to pinpoint the two main reasons for the plunge, and the biggest problem is AT&T (T). Two years ago, Motorola still had fairly ambitious product launches for AT&T. The latest numbers from Google?s (GOOG) Android Developers page show that Gingerbread?s share of all Android devices has finally dropped below the 50% threshold as Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and Android 4.1/4.2 Jelly Bean have at last started to catch on. According to Google, 29% of Android devices use Ice Cream Sandwich while 10% use some variation of Jelly Bean. Even so, the fact that Gingerbread is still the most widely used version of Android more than two years after its debut shows that fragmentation is still a significant issue for the world?s most popular mobile operating system.http://news.yahoo.com/jelly-bean-adoption-rate-hits-double-digits-gingerbread-135631248.htmlFri, 04 Jan 2013 08:56:31 -0500BGR Newsjelly-bean-adoption-rate-hits-double-digits-gingerbread-135631248Google emerges from FTC probe relatively unscathed
<img src="http://l.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/b85uGLfHzZ3B6fcQzBITvQ--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7Zmk9ZmlsbDtoPTg2O3E9ODU7dz0xMzA-/http://media.zenfs.com/en_us/News/ap_webfeeds/3174bd7660d99300250f6a706700fadd.jpg" width="130" height="86" alt="Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chairman Jon Leibowitz gestures as he speaks during a news conference at FTC in Washington, Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, to announce that Google is agreeing to license certain patents to mobile phone rivals and stop a practice of including snippets from other websites in its search results as part of a settlement to end a 19-month investigation in the search leader's business practices. For the Samsung we know today, Android is a perfect match. It provides a solid foundation and a host of terrific functions, and it gives Samsung the freedom to drop its own software and solutions on top. For the Samsung of the future, though, this might not be the best possible model. Samsung may be approaching a point where it wants to take more complete ownership of the mobile experience it offers customers. Today, Galaxy phones offer Samsung?s mobile experience combined with Google?s mobile experience. Tomorrow, the electronics giant might look to eliminate or at least change half of that equation.
